STURGEON BAY — The U.S. Coast Guard Sturgeon Bay search and rescue crews launched an airboat Sunday to locate and rescue six fisherman.

The group was fishing on fast ice off Little Sturgeon Bay when the ice broke free and was blown out into the bay, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard worked with the Wisconsin DNR, Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department to find the fisherman.

“Always a reminder, check the weather and wear a life jacket when you go out, landing that walleye is not worth the risk,” the Coast Guard wrote in a social media post.
