STURGEON BAY — The U.S. Geological Survey on reported a 2.9 magnitude earthquake Friday morning east of Sturgeon Bay deep below Lake Michigan.

The earthquake was detected about 9:20 a.m. about 25 miles east of Sturgeon Bay in Lake Michigan, about 7 miles below the surface. (Lake Michigan is less the .2 miles at its deepest.)

The USGS monitors and reports on earthquakes, assesses earthquake impacts and hazards, and conducts targeted research on the causes and effects of earthquakes.

They undertake these activities as part of the larger National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), a four-agency partnership established by Congress.
